Description

This thixotropic epoxy gel coat is used for hand laminating and tooling. It cures at room temperature and provides strong abrasion resistance. The series includes RED, GREY, WHITE, and NEUTRAL variants, with NEUTRAL being color-neutral for pigments and fillers. For high-temperature applications up to 140°C (284°F), a different variant is recommended.

  • Can coat vertical surfaces without sagging.
  • After the epoxy becomes “tacky-hard”, fiberglass cloth is laminated behind the surface coat using Free Form™ AIR putty or EpoxAmite™ Laminating Epoxy

  • Cured surface machines precisely without chipping.
  • Applications include precision tooling, master and pattern making, core boxes, and fixtures.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Use in a well-ventilated area. A NIOSH approved respirator is recommended.
  • Wear safety glasses, long sleeves, and rubber gloves.
  • Avoid mixing in glass or foam containers due to high exotherm.
  • Store and use materials at 23°C (73°F). Elevated temperatures reduce pot life.
  • Measure and mix resin and hardener properly for full cure properties.
  • Conduct a small test application for suitability.

Applying A Release Agent

  • Use a release agent for nonporous surfaces to prevent adhesion.

Measuring / Dispensing

  • Accurate ratio measurements by volume or weight are required.
  • Dispense parts into clean containers.

Adding Color

  • Color with specific tints. Pre-mix tint with Part A before adding Part B.

Mixing

  • Ensure mixing utensils are clean.
  • Mix parts thoroughly for at least 3 minutes, scraping sides and bottom.
  • Pot life can be extended by pouring into a shallow pan.

Adding Fillers

  • Add dry fillers by pre-mixing with Part A.

Important

  • Mixed resin and hardener generate heat.
  • Avoid using foam or glass containers or applying sections thicker than 0.32 cm (1/8 inch).
  • If exotherm occurs, move to open air.

Applying

  • Apply two thin layers using a disposable brush.
  • Work quickly to avoid premature setting.
  • Let each layer partially cure for 1 hour until “tacky hard”.
  • Laminate with putty or resin and reinforcement cloth.

Cure Time

  • Refer to specified cure times at 23°C (73°F).
  • Cured material can be dry sanded. Use a mask to prevent inhalation of particles.

Heat Curing

  • Cures at room temperature but can be accelerated with heat.
  • Higher curing temperatures increase heat deflection temperature.
  • Allow to cure for 30 minutes, then 1 hour at 93°C (200°F).

Painting

  • Can be painted with acrylic enamel paints. Let paint dry fully before use.

Removing Epoxy

  • Scrape uncured epoxy and clean residue with appropriate solvents.
