Description

This professional-grade, non-drying sculpting clay is known for its high wax content and low-tack texture. It effectively resists accidental deformation and avoids ragged edges typical of high-elongation clays. The clay is meltable for casting purposes and compatible with silicone applications. For thin sections, using armatures is advisable, and standard wood or metal tools are suitable for shaping.

Be aware that the clay is prone to surface oxidation. When stored in its original packaging, it maintains a long shelf life. However, repeated heating and cooling can accelerate oxidation. This characteristic can sometimes be advantageous, as it may harden the surface, which can be useful in handling or mold making.

Instructions

  1. For initial shaping, use scrapers or rake tools.
  2. To smooth the surface, choose a solvent based on the desired effect: use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol for light smoothing or Naphtha/Mineral Spirits for aggressive dissolving.
  3. Use citrus solvents cautiously, as they can inhibit silicone mold curing.
  4. Avoid Isopropyl Myristate if you want the clay to return to its original hardness.
  5. For hard variants, heated tools like wax pens are ideal.
  6. Note that repeated heating cycles may oxidize the clay, resulting in a firmer surface over time.

Temperature Guidelines

  • The clay softens at 49°C for Soft, 52°C for Medium, and 54°C for Hard.
  • All grades reach a trowelable consistency at 80°C, allowing for easy spreading.
  • For detail work or thin coatings, the clay becomes brushable at 85°C.
  • The material liquefies at 97°C, which is the maximum temperature to avoid damaging the clay's properties.

Safety Precautions

  • Always use aggressive solvents like Naphtha or Turpentine in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.
  • If using D-limonene (citrus) solvents, ensure the clay is thoroughly cleaned before applying silicone to prevent cure inhibition.
  • When using a wax pen or heating the clay to a liquid state, wear gloves to prevent skin burns from "tacky" hot clay.
  • Remember that Isopropyl Myristate is a non-reversible softener; do not use it on areas intended to stay crisp or detailed.
  • Minimize the number of times you melt and re-solidify the same batch of clay to maintain its original consistency.
