Description

Ecoflex™ GEL 2 is an extremely soft, platinum silicone rubber gel designed for medical simulation devices, makeup appliances, cushioning, gaskets, encapsulation, shaping, and enhancement products.

Suitable for applications needing a very soft silicone material.

Features

  • Shore hardness of 000-34, below the Shore 00 hardness scale.
  • Infinite color effects achievable with Silc Pig™ silicone pigments.
  • Certified skin safe by an independent laboratory.
  • Mixed 1A:1B by weight or volume.
  • Cures at room temperature (23°C) with negligible shrinkage.
  • “Dryer” and slightly less sticky than the original version.
  • Higher modulus for a firmer feel.
  • Requires encapsulation in another silicone like Dragon Skin™ or Q-Ballz™.

Instructions

Preparation

Store and use materials at room temperature (23°C). Use products promptly due to limited shelf life. Sulfur-based clays may inhibit curing, causing tackiness or incomplete curing. Conduct a small-scale test if compatibility is a concern. Apply a small amount of rubber to a non-critical area. If rubber is gummy or uncured after the recommended cure time, inhibition has occurred.

Using for Silicone Prosthetic Makeup Appliances

Can be used as a gel filler for silicone prosthetic appliances. Should be encapsulated. For example, Q-Ballz™ encapsulant can be airbrushed onto a mold surface (e.g., Mold Star™ silicone released with Ease Release™ 200) to create a membrane. The gel can then be poured or injected into the mold to create a soft prosthetic encapsulated with strong, non-tacky Q-Ballz™.

Measuring & Mixing

Pre-mix Part B thoroughly. Dispense required amounts of Parts A and B into a mixing container (1A:1B by volume or weight) and mix thoroughly, scraping the sides and bottom several times. For best results, ‘double mix’ by pouring the mixture into a new container and continue mixing until thoroughly blended. Use containers with straight sides and a flat bottom. Use flat, stiff mixing sticks with defined edges for scraping.

Pouring & Curing

Pour the mixture in a single spot at the lowest point of the containment field or mold. Allow the rubber to seek its own level to minimize entrapped air. Allow rubber to cure for 50 minutes at room temperature (23°C) before demolding. Time to demold can be reduced with mild heat. Do not cure rubber where temperature is less than 18°C.

Cure Inhibition

Addition-cure silicone rubber may be inhibited by certain contaminants in or on the pattern to be molded resulting in tackiness at the pattern interface or a total lack of cure throughout the mold. Latex, tin-cure silicone, sulfur clays, certain wood surfaces, newly cast polyester, epoxy, tin cure silicone rubber or urethane rubber may cause inhibition. If compatibility between the rubber and the surface is a concern, a small-scale test is recommended. Apply a small amount of rubber onto a non-critical area of the pattern. Inhibition has occurred if the rubber is gummy or uncured after the recommended cure time has passed.

To prevent inhibition, one or more coatings of a clear acrylic lacquer applied to the model surface is usually effective. Allow any sealer to thoroughly dry before applying rubber.

Because no two applications are quite the same, a small test application to determine suitability for your project is recommended if performance of this material is in question.

Note: Even with a sealer, platinum silicones will not work with modeling clays containing heavy amounts of sulfur. Do a small scale test for compatibility before using on your project.
