Description

Since 1977, this clay has been used for body armor and helmet testing.

Originally an artist's modeling clay, it offers the ideal consistency, density, and plasticity for precise ballistic impact measurement.

Ballistic Clay is utilized by military, law enforcement, and testing labs worldwide to assess backface deformation and impact energy.

Features include:

  • Superior thermal stability for consistent performance under controlled temperatures
  • Smooth, uniform texture for accurate indentation measurement post-impact
  • Non-drying and reusable, making it cost-effective for repeated testing cycles
  • Specified to NIJ Standard 0101.07 and ASTM E3004 for ballistic testing

Trusted for nearly five decades, it remains a benchmark material for accuracy, dependability, and consistency in protective equipment evaluation.

Instructions

Used as a backing material for ballistic and armor testing according to NIJ and ASTM standards.

  1. Condition the clay by kneading or mechanically working it until a uniform consistency is achieved.
  2. Bring the clay to the specified test temperature as required by the applicable standard, ensuring uniform temperature throughout the block for accurate results.
  3. Form the conditioned clay into blocks or panels of the required dimensions and thickness, ensuring a smooth, flat surface free of air pockets or seams.
  4. Place the clay backing securely behind the armor or helmet sample to be tested.
  5. Maintain controlled environmental conditions during testing to preserve consistency and performance.
  6. After ballistic impact, remove the armor and measure the depth and shape of the indentation in the clay to evaluate backface deformation and energy transfer.
  7. Record measurements according to the relevant testing protocol.

The clay does not dry out and can be reused by reconditioning and re-tempering to the required temperature.

Store unused material in a clean, covered container at room temperature to prevent contamination.
