Instructions
Used as a backing material for ballistic and armor testing according to NIJ and ASTM standards.
- Condition the clay by kneading or mechanically working it until a uniform consistency is achieved.
- Bring the clay to the specified test temperature as required by the applicable standard, ensuring uniform temperature throughout the block for accurate results.
- Form the conditioned clay into blocks or panels of the required dimensions and thickness, ensuring a smooth, flat surface free of air pockets or seams.
- Place the clay backing securely behind the armor or helmet sample to be tested.
- Maintain controlled environmental conditions during testing to preserve consistency and performance.
- After ballistic impact, remove the armor and measure the depth and shape of the indentation in the clay to evaluate backface deformation and energy transfer.
- Record measurements according to the relevant testing protocol.
The clay does not dry out and can be reused by reconditioning and re-tempering to the required temperature.
Store unused material in a clean, covered container at room temperature to prevent contamination.
