Description

This Shore 60A platinum-cure silicone rubber is designed for industrial applications. It features low viscosity, making it easy to mix, de-air, and pour. The silicone cures in 16 hours with negligible shrinkage, resulting in a firm rubber with high tensile and tear strength.

Smooth-Sil™ 960 offers good chemical and heat resistance, making this a good choice for production casting of resins and expanding foams.

Also used for:

  • Because of its firmness, also used for spin casting.
  • It is also used for embedding and electrical applications.
  • Smooth-Sil™ 960 is suitable for food-related applications.

Key Features

  • High chemical and heat resistance, suitable for production casting of resins and expanding foams.
  • Firmness supports spin casting and electrical applications.
  • Compatible with food-related applications.

Note: This product will not cure against surfaces containing sulfur, even when sealed.

Features

  • Extremely high dimensional stability.
  • High accuracy, low shrinkage molds.

Instructions

Safety

  • Use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear safety glasses, long sleeves, and rubber gloves to minimize contamination risk. Use only vinyl gloves; latex gloves will inhibit curing.

Store and use at room temperature (23°C). Warmer temperatures reduce working and cure time and shorten shelf life.

Cure Inhibition

Addition-cured silicone rubber may be inhibited by certain contaminants, resulting in tackiness or lack of cure. Contaminants include latex, sulfur clays, certain woods, newly cast polyester, epoxy, tin silicone rubber, or urethane rubber. Conduct a small-scale test if compatibility is a concern. Apply a small amount of rubber on a non-critical area. If the rubber is gummy or uncured, inhibition has occurred. Apply a clear acrylic lacquer to prevent inhibition, allowing it to dry thoroughly before applying rubber. Note: This product will not cure against sulfur-containing surfaces. Test clay for sulfur content before using.

Because no two applications are quite the same, a small test application to determine suitability for your project is recommended if performance of this material is in question.

Note: Even with a sealer, platinum silicones will not work with modeling clays containing heavy amounts of sulfur. Do a small scale test for compatibility before using on your project.

Applying a Release Agent

A release agent can ease demolding. Ease Release® 200 is recommended for silicone or other surfaces. Test a small application to ensure suitability.

Measuring & Mixing

  1. Pre-mix Part A and Part B thoroughly.
  2. Mix ratio is 100A:10B by weight. Use a gram scale to dispense parts A and B into a container and mix for 3 minutes, scraping sides and bottom.
  3. Vacuum degassing for 2-3 minutes (0.98 bar) is recommended to remove air.

Pouring, Curing & Performance

Pouring - Pour mixture in a single spot at the lowest point. The liquid should level at least 1.3 cm over the highest model point.

Curing - Cure for 16 hours at 23°C before demolding. Heat curing at 60°C can reduce demold time.

Use Plat-Cat® accelerator to reduce demold time, or Slo-Jo® retarder to extend pot life and cure times. Do not cure below 18°C.

Mold Performance & Storage

The mold's life depends on usage. Abrasive materials erode detail faster. Clean molds with soap solution and dry before storage. Store assembled molds on a level surface in a cool, dry environment.
