This skin-safe alginate molding material is designed for lifecasting baby and child hands and feet, ensuring gentle contact with skin while capturing fine details.
Features
- Mixes with water at a 1 part powder to 4 parts water ratio by weight (or 2 parts powder to 3 parts water by volume).
- Provides a working time of about 2 minutes and sets in approximately 3 minutes at room or warm water temperatures (25–27 °C / 77–80 °F).
- Color-change indicator: starts pink and turns white/light as it cures.
- Forms a firm yet flexible gel with sufficient tear strength for single-use molds.
- Not dimensionally stable long-term; should be cast soon after molding for best accuracy.
Molds are typically filled with gypsum plasters, stones, waxes, or fast-setting resins to create keepsake castings. Widely used for family keepsakes, memorial casts, and educational demonstrations where speed, safety, and ease of use are essential.
Instructions
This fast-setting, skin-safe alginate is used for making precise molds of baby or child hands and feet.
- Mix the powder with water at approximately 27 °C using the recommended ratio (generally 4 parts water to 1 part powder by weight).
- Stir quickly to achieve a smooth, lump-free gel. At around 27 °C, the working time is about 2 minutes, and the set/demold time is approximately 3 minutes.
- The gel changes color visibly as it cures.
Safety and Handling
- Use in a well-ventilated area.
- Wear safety glasses and a NIOSH-approved N95 dust mask when handling dry powder to minimize inhalation.
- Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes, do not ingest, and avoid breathing dust.
- Clean tools promptly after use.
- Alginate molds are temporary and should be cast into soon after demolding.
- Keep out of reach of children.
